The Maldives' capital and most populated city is Malé. Malé is one of the world's most densely inhabited cities, with 211,908 people living inside its administrative territory and conterminous geographical area of 8.30 square kilometers (3.20 sq mi) as of 2022.Geographically, the city is situated on North Malé Atoll's southern border. It was formerly known as the King's Island, the location of the palace and the seat of the old royal dynasty. At that time, the city was known as Mahal.The center of all commercial activity in the nation is a commercial harbor situated on the central island.
