China's capital city is Beijing, formerly known as Peking. With almost 22 million inhabitants, it is the most populated national capital in the world and, after Shanghai, the second-largest metropolis in China in terms of metropolitan area.With sixteen urban, suburban, and rural districts, it is a municipality in Northern China that is directly managed by the State Council.The Jing-Jin-Ji cluster is made up of Beijing's neighbors Tianjin to the southeast and Hebei Province to the majority.One of the world's most important hubs for culture, diplomacy, politics, business and economics, education, research, language, tourism, media, sport, science and technology, transportation, and the arts, Beijing is a global city. With one half of the city still having traditional hutong districts and the other half having been updated and altered to suit the times, Beijing blends modern and traditional architectural styles.More over one-fifth of Double First-Class Construction universities are public universities in Beijing, including Tsinghua University and Peking University, many of which are ranked among the best in the world and Asia-Pacific.
