The Birth: According to Buddhist tradition, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in the beautiful Sal grove of Lumbini in 623 BCE. It is believed that the newborn prince took his first seven steps and delivered a message of peace. 
The Ashoka Pillar: In 249 BCE, the Indian Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini and erected a sandstone pillar to mark the exact birthplace. Its Brahmi script inscription remains the oldest in Nepal.

BY Air : Traveling to Lumbini by air is fast and convenient. You will fly into Gautam Buddha International Airport (BWA) in Bhairahawa, located just 14 km (a 15–20 minute drive) from the sacred Lumbini garden. Passport must have six months or more validity remaining at the time of entry. One blank visa page available in passport for visa (not endorsements page) Nepali authorities generally allow entrance on an emergency passport printed overseas. Visa appropriate for purpose of travel.
BY Taxi : Traveling to Lumbini by taxi is one of the most convenient ways to reach the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha, particularly if you are crossing the India-Nepal border. Most travelers book a private cab from the nearest major Indian transit hub, Gorakhpur (a 3.5 to 4-hour drive to Lumbini) or fly directly to the Nepal border
