Dead Sea, Jordan

Dead Sea, Jordan

The Dead Sea is a hypersaline lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west. Sitting more than 430 meters below sea level, it is the lowest point on Earth's surface. Its extreme salinity—nearly ten times saltier than the ocean—prevents all aquatic life from surviving there, making it famous for its unique natural buoyancy that allows visitors to float effortlessly.

The Dead Sea has attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years. It was one of the world's first health resorts, and it has been the supplier of a wide variety of products, from asphalt for Egyptian mummification to potash for fertilisers. Today, tourists visit the sea on its Israeli, Jordanian and West Bank coastlines.
Bordering Nations: Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank. Jordan Rift Valley: It sits in a depression created by the Dead Sea Transform, an active fault line separating the African and Arabian tectonic plates. Dimensions: Spans roughly (50) kilometers in length and (15) kilometers in width, though its water levels have been receding for decades due to environmental shifts and human use
