Central China's Hunan is an inland province. Hubei to the north, Jiangxi to the east, Guangdong and Guangxi to the south, and Guizhou and Chongqing to the northwest are the province-level divisions that encircle this central location in the Yangtze watershed. Changsha, the capital and largest city, is located next to the Xiang River. Yueyang, Zhuzhou, and Hengyang are some of its most populated cities.With a nominal GDP of US$724 billion (CN¥4.6 trillion) in 2021, Hunan ranks in the top 20 largest sub-national economies in the world, with a PPP of more than US$1.1 trillion.[6][7] The economy of Hunan is the fourth largest in South Central China, the third largest in Central China, the ninth largest in China, and the fourth largest among landlocked provinces.There are several different dialects in the Hunan region. Xiang, Southwestern Mandarin, Gan, Hakka, and a few regional dialects whose identities are yet unknown, like Xiangnan Tuhua and Waxiang dialect, are among the dialects spoken in the province. Many people can converse in Chinese and speak their own ethnic language in places where ethnic minorities reside.  

Huguang was transformed into Hunan province in 1664, and the name was changed in 1723. Because of its location on the Yangzi River, Hunan developed became a significant communications hub. It was a significant hub for academic pursuits and Confucian philosophy, especially at Changsha's Yuelu Academy.
