Southwestern China contains the inland province of Yunnan. With a population of 47.2 million (as of 2020), the province covers an area of around 394,000 km2 (152,000 sq mi). Kunming serves as the province's capital. The province shares borders with Southeast Asian nations Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam, and Laos, as well as the Chinese provinces of Guizhou and Sichuan, as well as the autonomous territories of Guangxi and Tibet. According to per capita disposable income in 2014, Yunnan ranks as the fourth least developed province in China.With low elevations in the Southeast and high elevations in the Northwest, Yunnan is located in a hilly region. The eastern portion of the province is home to the majority of the people. In the west, elevations can range up to 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) from mountain summits to river valleys. In addition to having the most diverse plant life in China, Yunnan is abundant in natural resources. Yunnan may have 17,000 or more species of higher plants out of China's 30,000 or so kinds.In addition to having significant copper and nickel reserves, Yunnan has China's greatest reserves of aluminum, lead, zinc, and tin. In the past, modern Yunnan was traversed by the southwestern Silk Road that led to Bhitargarh in Bangladesh.In higher education, Yunnan has one "National Key University"—Yunnan University in Kunming.

Through the Chengdu-Kunming, Nanning-Kunming, and Guizhou-Kunming railways, Yunnan is primarily connected to Chengdu, Nanning, and Guiyang. The Yunnan high-speed railway, which significantly eases tourist transit, was formally launched at the end of 2016. Most cities in the southwest, central, east, north, and pearl river delta regions, as well as many other areas of the province, are currently essentially covered by bullet train lines.
