Yakushima, Japan

One of the Ōsumi Islands in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture is Yakushima. There are 13,178 people living on the island, which is 504.88 km2 (194.94 sq mi) in size. You can go to the island via hydrofoil ferry from Kagoshima seven or eight times a day, depending on the season; by slow car ferry from Kagoshima once or twice a day; or by plane to Yakushima Airport three to five times a day from Kagoshima, once a day from Fukuoka, and once a day from Osaka. The town of Yakushima serves as the administrative center of the entire island. Additionally, the town supplies Kuchinoerabujima, which is nearby. Within the boundaries of Yakushima National Park, 42% of the island is located.More than half of Yakushima's electricity comes from hydroelectric sources, and Kagoshima University has experimented with using excess power to create hydrogen gas. Honda's research on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has been tested on the island. The municipality operates electric vehicles instead of hydrogen vehicles on the island. The sole airport on the island is Yakushima Airport (KUM). Japan Air Commuter, a JAL subsidiary, operates scheduled commercial flights. The runway was being extended from 1500 to 2000 meters as of 2019, which will enable jet aircraft to operate and service a greater number of destinations. The runway development has not advanced and is still just 1500 meters long as of January 2024.

One of my favorite places to visit in Japan is Yakushima! A must-see for nature enthusiasts, this untamed and enigmatic island in Kyushu's Kagoshima Prefecture is well-known for its verdant forests, which served as the inspiration for Princess Mononoke from Studio Ghibli. Hiking and taking in the azaleas and cherry blossoms are best done in the spring (March to May). Beach activities and forest path exploration are ideal during the summer months of June through August. Steer clear of the typhoon season (September to October) and the rainy season (June to July).

You can reach Yakushima from different ways like there are direct flights, direct trains as well as direct buses services available for Yakushima.
AL and ANA are the only airline with scheduled passenger flights from Yakushima (KUM).
BY Air :  Kagoshima (KOJ) Airport, located 162.9 kilometers from Yakushima, is the closest airport. Miyazaki (KMI) is another airport in the area (191.9 km). All foreign tourists must adhere to the terms of their visas and enter Japan with a valid passport for the duration of their stay. At the moment, a visa is not needed for travel to Japan for up to 90 days. For the most recent information, it is advised to get in touch with the Japanese embassy or consulate that is closest to you, as entry and leave requirements are subject to sudden changes. A direct flight from Osaka or Fukuoka to Yakushima is the only method to get around Kagoshima. Every day, high-speed jetfoil boats travel between Kagoshima (at the Kagoshima Port high-speed ferry terminal) and Yakushima (at the Miyanoura or Anbo Port).
BY Train :  The travel time from Kagoshima Airport to the Kagoshima Main Port South Pier Passenger Terminal is: About 1 hour by limousine bus .
