Shanghai[a] is China's largest populated urban region and a direct-administered municipality. The Huangpu River flows through the city, which is situated on the Chinese coastline at the southern estuary of the Yangtze River. With around 24.87 million persons in 2023, the city proper has the second-largest population in the world, behind Chongqing, while the urban area has the highest population in China, with 29.87 million people.Initially a market town and fishing village, Shanghai gained prominence in the 19th century as a result of its advantageous port position and both local and international trade.
